Brendhan Garland encourages the decentralization of thought and empowers meaningful connection and discussion through the pairing of his paintings in site-specific installations with purpose driven, open-ended questions. Using found objects, Garland reflects upon social and political issues, captures the present emotional state and dismantles concepts of self or ego. Then, using research to expand upon the material and intuitive aspects of the physical work, questions and spaces are created that challenge centric ideas of thought and become the foundation for the site-specific installation. The ideas developed do not provide solutions, but rather opportunities to reflect and ask better questions.
Outside of installation work, Garland is committed to further studying how art can support or sustain autonomous futures rooted in eco-socialist structures.
